I heard it staight from a CHP officer / friend over the weekend that he had chased an Intrepid in access of 130mph. There was a post like a couple of weeks ago asking on the top speed on these cars. Well, I stated that my Intrepid showed around 120 on the speedometer on the freeway and the car was still trying to go, but I pulled off. Now, an Intrepid going 130mph, now that is crazy. It was a 96 ES with a 3.5. The reason he knew was because his grandpa had one and he used to try to fix it for him. DAAMMMM, 130mph

i'm gonna go with the cop's equipment being wrong. first 96 didn't offer any ungoverned cars unless this one had a 97 ungoverned Sport PCM (unlikely cuz the 97 has 2 02 sensors where the 96 has 4). second you can't superchip (eliminates governor) a 96, only a 93-94 because in 95 they changed the compression ratio of the 3.5. the car can probably go in excess of 135 or so, i might try it out this summer when i get some Z rated rubber.

ASE chips sells a chip that removes the gov on all intrepids they said it will work on my 96

The reason few people (Kenne-Belle, Superchips?, and ASE? do chips is not the compression change rather the programming style (an open chip versus a sealed computer design) The new computer called OBII.

I dont think we have the governor in the Canadian Intrepids do we?

Cos Ive taken my 96 to around 140KM without any trouble - havent gone beyond 140 but Ill give it a try.

Isent there a way to disable it though? Some mechanics may be able to help out.

According to what I read, the 3.5L engine in all cars (I can't remember if this includes Canada) will top out at 140mph.

I live In Canada and I have topped out the car at 140mph (224 km/h) I was red-lining my car and I didn't get a chance to see what it would drop to when I let off the gas.

It was pretty stupid to go that fast, but I was going 140 km/h and trying to merge, people would let me in so I nailed it, it was a rush, but I sure as hell ain't going to try that again.

the compression was changed in '96, the computers were changed in '95.

i have also heard of the 3.5's gonig 130, i have had mine to bout 128 or so. if you watch TLC when they have there police chase videos the one guy runs in an intrepid and they quote him as going over 130. if the car came from the factory with the michellen tires on there, you have no govenor from what i have heard and so have all the fun you want

i was going to post something about this yesterday but i was watching one of those cops chases on tv and they had a 1st gen intrepid white es. ot was some black guy that had mad dope well.

he got pulled over. and the the cops brought the god and they serached the car and when they tried to cuff him he jumped in the car and ran like a bat out of hell.

welll when they chased him they said the car was going well over 130mph and they couldnt even catch him.

well the idiot going at that speed bumped into a car and flipped and slid 1,500 feet until the car stopped.

A while ago I saw this Cops episode where a 2nd gen ES was running from the cops. The cops pulled him over, but when the cop got out of his cruiser, the 'Trep took off (actually burning rubber). When the cruiser turned around the 'Trep was way, way down the road. :)

hey Wutang, yea that is the Intrepid I was talking about. Well I don't know if the 130+mph was accurate, but I have opened up my 96 at 120 mph easily 4 months ago. I am guessing around 125 mph, because it actually passed over the 120 listing on the gaUGE

Yeah, I saw that cops too w/the second gen 2.7L pursuit. It was cool! That was one of the few times I've seen a cop almost loose someone like that. Yeah, he spun the front wheels that had those bolt on wheel covers and was out. I think the cop even thought he lost him for a minute.

I think I've seen the pursuit on TLC as well. I think it was a white 3.5L first gen or something close? Did they say he was doing 130MPH? Wow! That's crazy! My 99ES was pretty smooth at 120MPH until the speed restrictor kicked in but I don't particularly like going that fast too often. A lot of the time I didn't even realize I was going that fast because it was so smooth until the speed restrictor would jerk you back and wake you up. Just make sure your tires are inflated at 35PSI or you may have a blowout! Chrysler states that although they encourage safe driving that if you are going to do an excess of 75MPH to have your tires inflated to 35PSI. I think this is also stated in the 99 Manual. I've always thought 32PSI was a little low for high speeds.

Later guys,
MoparPerformance
