I just have a few question about VCD's and SVCDs - first off, what exactly is the difference?

I have a bunch of Divx movies on my computer that I want to burn so they'll play in a DVD player - I have a tv-out on my computer here, but I want to be able to take the movies with me when i go home to see my parents and watch them there. The problem I'm running into is the *.avi files are just under 700megs so they'll fit on a cd, but when i use Nero to burn a SVCD i can only fit 1/3 of the movie on a cd?

vcd = watchable quality.. usually 2 discs per movie.. works on most dvd players.. out of the 8 i've tired only one hasn't worked

svcd = near dvd quality 2-3 cd's per movie depending on encoding rate.. plays on some dvd players.. out of the same 8 they've played on 3 of the ones i've tried
