i just want some more info on this. will it actually bolt on? what modifications would need to be done to make this fuctional, how much would it cost, what the the limits of the transmission (as in, at what point will the tranny break because of too much hp)

for those who dont know what im talking about, SoBL94 says "the ZFHPFL18 [the audi tranny] should be a direct bolt on for the 42LE. You can find one in a junked Audi 5000 or an Audi A4 up until 1996. Quattro is even a possibility." in this post: http://www.dodgeintrepid.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15280

if this can be done it would definatly be an incredible mod.

Speak to some transmission shops, ask them if you can get them to compare the bolt pattern and possibilities of interchanging those trannies. IF you can, and those trannies say handle 400 hp at the wheel stock or something, then I imagine a lot of people will get real creative real quick. (turbo, to name one person :p )

You would need a lot more than a different transmission to get the AWD advantage, let alone, the Quattro advantage. However, it must be noted that there have been several FWD Audis (they're not all Quattro) with a similar longitudinal V6 engine layout as is found in the intrepid. Audis are one of the few cars which have that. As for the strength of the Audi transmission, well, we know it's a lot more durable than the A606 42LE found in the LH-cars. Now sure, the transmssion probably can't take 500 horsepower, but then again, who is making 500 horse out of an intrepid? No member here, that's for sure.

Before everyone starts dissing how bad our trannies are you must first be scecific on what needs to be upgraded.
For example for old school Mopar V8 trannies like the 727. How much power can it take??
If it's stock from a 2 barrel New Yorker, even a stock motor can wear out the bands and clutches and eventually fail.
On the other hand a 727 with performance clutches and hi performance shift calibrations they can handle over 750hp.

The LH trannies have a terrible performance calibration, they are set up to shift soft for smooth shifting, this makes heat and wears clutches. A transmission mechanic at the dealership showed me a seal that wears prematurely causing the clutches to slip = heat = limp mode = tow truck.

Yes, this is understood, of course, since there has never been a "performance" variant seen here of an A606 42LE, then there is only one version which we could be talking about when we are calling it weak. Some of the OEM pieces do not work well.
