Hi

I have 2 intrepids - 2001 and 2003 - and I'm kind of wondering whether I should leave the intrepid clan which I've been a member of since moving here from the UK 8 years ago. I used to drive Citroen XM's over there (great car)

and found the Intrepid attractive as a similarly large roomy car with a comfortable ride, plenty of power etc and ready availability of aftermarket and used spare parts and they're a very reasonably priced used car. The parts issue is something I've really appreciated - I was talking to a mechanic the other day and he was shaking his head about a VW he was working on and that just a few parts cost $300 because VW is the only supplier.

I'm not eager to move on. I've liked the intrepids a lot and they have everything I want in a car but they're much rarer now than they used to be and older. Intrepids are all I've actually owned since coming from the UK and I wonder what people on this forum have replaced their intrepids with as their primary car for getting around? I am wondering about the Chrysler 300 but there aren't a lot of them either.

Are you talking about the 300m from 1999-2004 or the 300 series from 2004 to present?

300, 300C, 300 Touring, etc.

1999-2004 I think but I'm open minded on the whole thing. Maybe people are getting Hyundai these days..

Thanks for the thought, I'll look into it. I like Chrysler, a bit on the individualistic side, something it has in common with Citroen..

I would go back to the Citroen XM, especially the 70's vintage. :)

I moved on

I went to a 2014 Dodge Charger RT. It's a dream to drive. I still have my daughter's 01 Intrepid ES, and I'm selling my 99 LHS, but I'll be driving the Charger from now on. I did 15 years in Intrepids and LHS's, and I enjoyed it, but I got the new car bug and couldn't be happier.

I think one key thing is availability of aftermarket parts. The great thing about Chrysler is you can buy replacements on Amazon and Ebay and other online stores for a fraction of what you would pay either through a dealer or through a regular local parts specialist. I had to buy a strut module last year that was $230 in my local parts retailer but was $108 on Amazon. I think that's a huge factor in the economics of keeping older cars on the road.

I'd stay away from the 1st gen LX's (2005-2010) IMO. I had a 2006 Dodge Magnum SXT (3.5L) and after around 50k, all I did was change front suspension parts. Money pit. All the problems were from the Mercedes parts, not the Chrysler parts. Go figure. Know many other owners that experienced the same thing. If you go with an LX, go for a 2011-2015.

D.I. was the first car forum I joined back in 2002 when I had my 2001 Intrepid SE.

I currently drive a 2012 Ford Focus hatchback I bought new. After my money pit Magnum, I was looking for a smaller more fuel efficient hatchback. I've always bought American cars and Chevy had no compact hatchback all Chrysler had was the Caliber (ugh). So I had to jump ship to Ford after being a die hard Chrysler guy for most of my car owning life.

Someone I knew in the UK had a Mercedes and it was a real disaster - always going wrong and parts costing gazillions of £'s. It was a car from new and he was a very well-paid engineer so there was no excuse at all. It's amazing the reliability reputation a large PR budget will buy you!

I guess I'm just lucky with my 2006 Magnum SRT-8. Less than 60k miles on it and I bought it used. No front end problems to date. The SRT-8 uses most of the same front suspension parts as the other trim levels. Maybe the low miles is contributing to that?

I'm pretty much set on taking my time and looking out for a late 300m or seeing if someone's selling grandpa's much loved and garaged Intrepid (preferred) or Concorde/LHS that he's only driven 2,000 miles in over the last 5 years.

Good luck buying an 11 year old LH with low miles for a decent price. Might be a few out there...but will be scarce especially in Canuck Land! Remember the last LH rolled off the assembly line 11 years ago.

You haven't replaced any tie rods yet?

I shouldn't have had the suspension problems I did as I drive mostly highway. The "city" miles are mostly suburbs. Not like I was driving over lots of potholes.

If I ever won the lottery though I would still try to find a garage queen Magnum SRT-8 or a now discontinued Cadillac CTS-V wagon, though the Magnum is the cooler looking of the 2. Chrysler screwed the pooch big time by not advertising the Magnum after the 2005 model year and then they spent the money to make over the interior and the front fascia for 2008, then discontinue it! Butt heads. I think it was still selling over in Europe though for a couple more years, though they called it a 300 tourer or some such and it had the 300front fascia.

I really liked the storage space of the Magnum. They have more cargo space then some people realize. I'm 5' 10" and I could lay stretched out (with the rear seats folded down of course) in the back. The chopped windows made the Magnum look longer than it was. It was an optical illusion. In reality the Magnum was 6 inches shorter than an Intrepid and about 3" shorter than a Chevy Impala. That was one knock I had against my Intrepid. Large trunk, little opening so you couldn't get some big stuff into the trunk. Didn't help either that my rear seats didn't fold down on my SE.

Really sucks that American car makers won't sell wagons any more. In Europe you can get a Ford Focus ST wagon and even a Fusion wagon (Mondeo in Europe).

Yep...no front suspension work needed to date. Outer/Inner Tie Rods included. Like I said...the low mileage...under 60k might be a factor so far.

And speaking of Garage Queens...here's the Magnum in it's storage space!
