I live in Houston if my location would help at all. Anyways I can't find an engine for my 98 intrepid.... I posted other threads so I'm just gonna start saving for a new engine but I don't know where I can actually get one. Also, people were talking about going with 2.7 gears. Should I switch out the gears I have now since I have a 3.2 currently..? What other parts do i need to buy so that the 3.5L will fit in my car? Once I get this engine then I will start to focus on exhausts and such....

Hit all the junk yards, and private sales...

The gears are found in any LH vehicle with a 2.7 as said above. You can access the gears by removing the transmission mount at the rear of the power-train. It's easier to remove the cross member and the mount, keep the trans jacked for support. You'll see the cover to pull off with about a million bolts. Within you'll find the two gears and chain. Just turn the clip and pulll them off. Mark which which one is for which side.

It's impossible* to install a gear set the wrong way, so there's no need to worry about marking them.

* Unless you machine one AND build a spacer...

Oh that isn't the concern. I've always been taught with things like this, that some chains are designed to handle torque/load bearing more so one direction than another, and if not applicable there is also the ware variable to consider. Flipping which face of the gears is outwards reverses which edge leads for forward moving gears.

I never bought into it horribly but it's something to consider.

I'd be interested to see how you could design a chain to handle more torque in one direction than another. Tension, is just tension, right?

The gear faces can't be assembled "incorrectly". The only things I would worry about are:

1) Keeping chains and gears as "sets" (Since they have worn together.)
2) Keeping the orientation of the chain the same (Always the same side facing rearward, for example. The same worn together issue.)

I'd have to look at my sets to see if there is a special link on the chain to indicate front/rear.

I said the same thing when one of the older guys in the shop hassled us - we all rolled our eyes. Apparently there are such chains that are designed to handle stronger loads rotating one direction from another. But he had a point as far as ware goes...

You can reverse the face of the gears. I did it when swapping mine before realizing and correcting.
