if i had another car to drive i probably would. there's a kid i know that has a mach 1 mustang (it's a piece, 302 and auto, it runs high 16s) that is in beautiful shape that drives a 5-speed metro in the winter.

it's a cool little car, we drive it around, run it in to snow banks, rev it up and bomb it at 3000 rpms, etc. it's bulletproof.

same here...year round. Drop the rims, put on the aluminum stock rims, HEET the gas tank, and away I go.

Sad part is the salt in WI too. Back home I could wash my car off every night after school in Dad's heated car shop...damn apartments here in Sun Prairie...sigh...

An Intrepid is a regular car, as much as I believe it is a sweet car and should be stored in the winter, because the winter ruins a car. I just make sure that the salt and sand is kept off the car, I was it about 3 times a week in the winter, well I guess I do in the summer as well. LOL

How much does salt really damage cars these days?? They love to use salt around the Chicago area during the winter (my car is usually covered with it), and I'm too damn lazy to wash my car during the winter at all.

Maybe I just don't keep my cars long enough to have a problem, but I've never had one.

Also, isn't having a heavier car better, when it snows?

I figure I got insurance!! If something happens, I'll just get a new 'trep :)

Besides, I feel safe in my Intrepid. A lot safer than I would driving an Escort or Metro if it's slick out...

Salt is pretty dangerous.. hmm, paint these days is lead free, its alot softer. Salt can do some damage if left un attended. make sure to clean the inside of the doors. and under fenders, common spot for ruse to start forming.

The only reason I drive the Escort is because I could care less what happens to it. (Mind you I'm only talking if it's snowing...other then that I drive the 'Trep.)

The little 'scort actually does better in the snow then my 'Trep does (hate to admit it) It's probably because the tires are really skinny. (the 'Trep also doesn't have ABS, so the little guy stops better too)

The fact that it is a dent-mobile and has over 170K miles on it doesn't hurt...I am absolutely positve you cannot kill this car. Never have replaced anything on this car except brakes and oil. Gotta hand it to Mazda, they can sure engineer a car and give credit to someone else. (ie: Ford)

In Eau Claire here, the School closed for 4 hours last year due to ice. that ended the record tho.. something like 15 years without a winter weather related closing..... Crazy people run this school I tell ya... sheesh
I remember a few times leaving an hour earlier for class because 15 inches of snow were in my way.

Right on bros. I was thinking of using the trep this winter. I think that newer cars have newer paint and newer metal keeping them pretty well protected from salt. Meaning? Well just plain old better technology and manufacturing. I know my 85 Cimeron started rusting badly the very first year it ever saw winter up here, and that was in 98! So salt definately harms vehicles. My father's 94 Caravan looks like it's right brand new. I'm sure trepid owners don't have to worry to much about salt but if I drive it winters I will certainly wash it daily. And sad but true, you should go through a wash that gets the underbody. That is very important if they salt where you live. VERY! I would recommend standing 'em up and undercoating or Spray sealing almost everything you can underneith. Thats of course if you want to make her last and last, whick I do :)

Thrasher, its like whats in your freezer but in abundance like the sand on your beaches.
I wish I can take mine off the road for the winter but I have to use it. It'll never be the same however that's life.
I'll probably have my wife take it to work since she only works 2 minutes from here and it'll sit all day. I'll use her Sunfire GT.
Intrepids don't come off the road. Hey, I've seen Miatas in winter. Corvettes are a rare sight in winter as wll as some T/A, Z-28. Bimmers, MB, Lexus. Infinity, Audi are all common sights here in winter. Porsches hibernate as well as the more exotic cars and classics.

Thrasher, I'll post a pic in mid-winter of the snow piled halfway up my maple tree and taller than the roofline of the trep. Also, the trep will be white, not black.
Then next spring I can figure out how to remove all the paint chips from the salt, and especially the salt being riveted out from the salt trucks.

Ohhhhhhhh, winter. How I hate it!!! 45 years of this crappy season. I wanna move to FLA or AZ.

I had a BMW Z3 come in for snow tires last fall. If that can go through a WI winter an intrepid can. Course I ride the Motorcycle in the snow too, so I may not be the best one to trust on the effect of winter on a car. The bike is a ton faster when it is cold out though.
