I bought one of those Navman GPS units from Radio Shack and for the first time I used my cigarette lighter but it came on for just a second then it went dead. What could've caused that??

To make sure it was working ok they tested the cigarette lighter in the store and in another car and it worked fine in both places.

I have a 2002 Intrepid ES with 96,000 miles on it. I'm sure it won't cost much to fix this, right?

Thanks for all your input.

It could be a fuse or on the back of the long socket it could be a loose wire. Take off the bezel and see if its the wire.

If its not the fuse nor the wire its not hard to run a new wire. The old wire could be pinched somewhere where you cant see but I got a feeling its not connected 100% to the back of the lighter socket.

My '01 ES has a cigarette lighter in the ashtray and a duplicate receptacle in the armrest box. The one in the ashtray doesn't work, but the one in the armrest does. Look for a second receptacle in your armrest. I suspect the ones in the ashtray don't work because along about this time with the push against smokers you had to purchase a "smoker's package" in most cars.

You're talking about the armrest where you rest your right arm on? The one that has a flip top where you can store things? I'm 99% sure there is no cigarette lighter since it's just a box arm rest with 2 compartments to store things. I'm surprised you have it in your ES and it's just one year before mine. Are you sure you don't have the smokers package since you have TWO cigarette lighters?

Cryptkeeper, it is the lighter socker. My car didn't even come with a lighter since I bought it used with 95,000 miles on it. It's been running well and it's been almost a year.

check the fuse for the lighter in the car if its fine then on the lighter adapter for the Navman see if it unscrews by the contact tip there should be fuse in there it probably blew.

How do I check on the fuse for the cigarette lighter in the car?

The Navman is fine. Nothing blew there because I tested it in someone else's car and it works fine.

On the left side of your dashboard theres a cover pull it off and the fuse panel will be right there.
on the cover there should be a diagram telling you what fuse controls what.

I don't know if it has the smoker's pkg since I bought it used. Yes, I'm talking about the flip-top arm rest. Mine has a socket at the bottom rear with a flip up cover. I guess it's for accessories like cell phones. That one's live, the one in the ashtray isn't. Maybe it's different from your '02 (?)

I bought mine used too and I found the owner's manual for it and it only mentions 1 cigarette lighter but they call it a power outlet. It's on the instrument panel. There's nothing in the manual for troubleshooting if the power outlet goes out.

Even if I remove the side panel and locate the fuse what do I do? Is it like the fusebox in your house where you can just flip a switch to turn it back on or do you replace the fuse?

No its nothing like your house house panel.
find the fuse in the panel and remove it by just pulling it out with the removal tool that is attached to the dash cover if its not there just use a pair of needle nose pliers.
look at the side of the fuse you will see a flat wire inside the fuse if the wire is broken or looks burned replace the fuse.
actually try a new fuse anyways every once and awhile the fuse will look fine and still be bad.

Thanks for all your input guys. I had trouble getting that left side panel off so I took it to a mechanic just to make sure it was done right and lo and behold you guys were right, it was just a blown fuse and he replaced it and it only cost me 5 bucks and my Navman GPS works fine now.

I appreciate the quick responses from fellow treppies for any issues that may come up.

I think the Intrepids are like the LX's also in that you can move the fuses so you can choose whether the cigarette lighter or the extra plug will be on continous or only on when the ignition switch is on.

my fuse box says "ignition/lighter" 15A, so if it was blown don't think the car would start. The fuse looks good, but no voltage at the red wire that plugs into the lighter/power by the ashtray. The black wire does show continuity to ground (the metal around the ignition key. So if I run a new wire to the lighter/power connector, what should I connect it to (and how)? Thanks

You have one of two scenarios.

There's a fuse in the Junction block for the ciggy lighter that has two positions. Supplying power with the ignition off or only with the ignition on. Moving the fuse to one position or the other determines when the ciggy lighter gets power. The junction block fuse area is the one at the end of dash on the Driver's side.

Have you checked power at the lighter outlet with both scenarios? Ignition On/Off? If nothing then the fuse is most likely open.

What year/model is your car?

And the car will start fine with the fuse for the lighter blown.

Thanks for your quick reply Ronbo. I had forgotten to turn the key back on after finally finding the plug that plugs into the lighter. There is power now when the key is on. It's a 2000 Intrepid and the lighter hasn't worked for years. I can't reach far enough to plug the lighter in where it's supposed to seat, near the ashtray above the gear shifter, so it's dangling on the passenger side and now runs an old boombox - the cassette player quit working some time ago, so now I can listen again. Thank you very much.
