Thank God I read this board before I took my car to the dealership. Its $70.00 just to check it. Why couldn't they have given me the same information I received from this board? While I was on the interstate the car jumped into second gear and the check engine light came on. It would not shift out of second in the automatic mode or autostick mode. I read a post that mentioned the codes that should come up and the speed sensors may need to be replaced. http://www.dodgeintrepid.net/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=9&t=000285<< link to post.

Autozone prices the speed sensors at 16.99 and 17.99 for input and output. But my question is why is the car running in safe mode?

Manufacturers have done this because too many people ignore the check engine light if their car seems to be O.K. If the problem is serious enough to cause major damage then the computer shifts into limp home mode which is meant only to get the car to the repair shop ASAP.
