My wife's pc runs XP Pro and a corprate edition of Norton Anti Virus and there seems to be a problem somewhere. I wanted to remove the Norton and install Systemworks 05 (which works fine on my pc) but to start with the program is not listed in add/remove programs. Systemworks will install but without the virus protection as the other is still present. She has downloaded a trial version of a registry checker and when run it says that there can be as many as 42 problems only some of which it can repair without (supposidly) buying the non trial version. I ran a check disk (in normal mode) and it has not cured it. She has also tried to install a free anti virus but it cannot install it because of a "missing kernel"! I am wondering if we need to re-format the h/d (which I have never done before). I do not know what exactly is the cause of the problem and am not sure as to how I can find out where/what the problem actually is. Is the problem with the virus a symptom? If it is how can I find this corprate virus edition to get rid of it? I kinda think that the problem is h/d related but where? Anyone got any ideas please........Max!

your running XP that's good. XP has a function called system restore. Go to your start menu, Programs. Accessories, System Tools then click on System Restore. When ever you think your problem started restore the computer to some date before that. My System sets a restore point every week and before every new program install.

Hope that helps you out.

Sorry but the only restore point that I can use (it only shows one) makes no differance. I have also just completed a scan disk in safe mode and it still is as bad. I have tried to remove the free anti v using add/remove programs and it just comes up error so it will not let me do that either........Max

go to this web site:

www.ccleaner.com and download the freeware cleaner there.

CCleaner is one of the better, if not the best, XP registry cleaner/fixer around.

Then, de-install ALL Norton/Symantec stuff. All of it. You can always re-install what you want to keep later on but for now, KILL NORTON/SYMANTEC dead.

Then rerun CCleaner.

Repeat as necessary.

Do reboots in between the deinstalls and runs of CCleaner.

If you have dsl or cable broadband, check to see if your provider offers a free subscription to Mcafee or PC-cillin (TrendAV). Use that instead of Sophos or Norton.

Thanks, have made some progress (I guess!!) downloadedthe ccleaner and ran it. 42 errors came up which it fixed and then re-booted. The "Symantec Corprate Edition" is still not listed in anywhere that I have found so far. The "AvG" seems to be un-removable. When the pc boots to the desktop an error message comes up "Could not initialise AVG antivirus database kernel interface. Application cannot run". I have also tried to remove it using add/remove programs and it will not let me! I am now trying to find all the files that are associated with norton etc. I still do not understand why it is not yo be found on the add/remove list?
