Aftermarket brake calipers for endurance racing

Hi all,

I have a 2002 Intrepid R/T which has been converted into a race car for the 24 hours of Lemons endurance race. It's been in two races now and it's become a bit of fan favorite in the Pacific Northwest race because nobody thought we would last an entire race and we now have two under our belt. We're climbing our way up the rankings and I'm hoping to win the class C race in October. We even managed to win the Judges Choice award because my team is awesome and there are some Mopar fans amongst the judges.

My question for you all ism, what options are there for brake caliper upgrades? We changed pads in the last race and found all kinds of problems. The single piston design is causing uneven wear on the pads and the piston itself disintegrated on one of the calipers. So, we're looking for the best brake calipers we can get for a 2nd gen R/T. Despite the $500 budget on a car for 24 hours of Lemons, though do not restrict the budget on safety equipment. Anything related to the braking system is considered safety equipment, so we can spend some money on this (aka no budget).

Please let me know what aftermarket support there is for braking systems. We're so proud of what we've gotten out of this car and we want to push it even farther.

Thanks,
Scott

There may be others who know first hand more than I do about options for significant upgrades to the brake system- BUT, my recollection from past discussions is that there are no bolt-on caliper upgrades. I think you'd be on your own to adapt (engineer) a suitable 4-piston caliper using caliper-to-knuckle adapter brackets, and then have a custom rotor made. My recollection is that the standard joke on this topic would be to pay a $4 to $5 thousand dollars for a Wilwood (semi-custom? full custom?) kit.

I hope someone comes along and proves me wrong.

You might contact Diversified Cryogenics (Frozen Rotors) to see what they may suggest or offer.

We're still rocking the Intrepid R/T in Lemons and we just got back from the third race. Unfortunately, the brake issue came back with a vengeance. We pretty much had 1st place locked down in our class when the brakes went out. Fortunately, our best driver was behind the wheel and kept it together, safely getting it off the track. However, when it got to the paddock, the brake caliper burst into flames and pretty much ended the race for us. We did scrounge up some calipers, pads and rotors and get them on so we were able to finish the race. So we had that at least. We also picked up the "I got screwed" award. You can probably guess what that's for.

We're adding some fabricators to the team now, so hopefully we can do some kind of custom job to get a 4 caliper piston in here. I'll check in with the guy on the 300M forum to see where he is at.

We don't have much video, but we are planning to add in a racecapture system for the next race which will allow us to stream live. The guys next to us in the paddock had one and it was incredible. Not just for video but for the full spread of telemetry you can pull down. You can check us out in the last two 24 hours of lemons wrapups.

Another one should be out in the next couple of weeks for this last race.

Way to represent the LH family at Lemons!!! Great videos and looks like a lot of fun.
Sorry to say there has been no progress or updates on brakes to help your issue.
I'm guessing you are using Cryo treated drilled and slotted rotors all the way around.
Maybe experiment with a manual proportioning valve to get more braking on the rears to help out??
Just my$0.02

I know one person at the 300M Club has collected OEM spindles and a set of Cadillac Brembos for this upgrade, I saw them in his garage last October and at that point he was looking for a fabricator to adapt the Cadillac calipers to the LH spindles. He moved a few months later and has been busy with updating the new house, but perhaps there will be some progress next year.

I loved the video, except I'm not sure how great it is to listen to them say things like, "Aren't all of the Intrepid s off the road now due to reliability issues and corrosion?"

Looks like we found a shop that will make us the hardware to adapt a set of Wilwood 6 piston calipers to our car. It sounds like they already did it for a Dodge Grand Caravan which is also in Lemons. I'll report back how this goes once we have everything together. Good thing brakes are considered safety equipment and are exempted from the $500 lemons limit.

So excited!! We're making believers out of the LH platform in Lemons circles. It's going to feel soooo good to take the podium!

Just installed them yesterday! Looks awesome! Haven't received the pads or the SS brake lines, but the custom build in order to mount them is spot on. Cleared the wheels too.

That looks great, kudos to you for finding someone to fabricate those brackets. Please let us know how much better the pedal feel is and stopping distance improvements. Do those fit inside factory 16 inch wheels?

I have 17 inch aftermarket wheels, so I'm not sure about 16s. Car is currently at a shop getting a transmission swap, but I'll see how much clearance remains. If you email TCE with the wheel specification, they might be able to tell you off the cuff if it will fit. They are pretty responsive.

Just got back from our Lemons race. We got 2nd place in class and I'm sure we're going to win in the next race.

The brakes are incredible! I felt like we were stopping in half the distance while I was bedding in the new pads. My team had learn all new lines throughout the track because we were stopping so damn fast. It was truly a night and day experience. Given that we raced this car hard for 2 days at 7 hours a day, I can pretty confidently say that these calipers and this setup works and it's very reliable. I will give the caveat that there was a lot of rain in this race, so the brakes didn't get as hot as they normally would, but there was zero brake fade throughout the race, so I'm pretty confident I'm not going to have any issues.

Anyway, can't say enough good things about it. I'm probably going to talk with them about a setup for rear brakes, but since we share the rears with some other non-LH platforms and it's not as funky a design as the fronts, it probably won't require nearly as much work to develop. I'll update this thread as we progress.

The 24 hours of Lemons wrap up video came out for the latest race. Bigfoot New Balance│Ridge '24│24 Hours of Lemons (youtube.com) Discussion of our car comes in around 10:30, if you want to skip to that. For all of those unhappy with the disrespect the Intrepid has been getting, the announcers had to admit that the Intrepid has been a contender. Also, I've got a youtube channel that I plan to live stream all my races on. I have one this weekend driving one of my Lemons team mates E30 BMWs in the Lucky Dog endurance race. If you want to see how we're doing this weekend, please subscribe. We will be back in the Intrepid for the Lemons race on September 14-15.
