Thats right; I raced another trep owner!! He's a coworker so it's all good. I have a 2000 SE with a 2.7L. He has a 2000 ES with a 3.2L. I didn't look under the hood, thats what he told me. But off the line my damn foot slipped off the gas, and then I just saw his car going farther from me. Not being beaten yet, I ****ing floored it, cut in front of this Cavalier, and it was off to the races!! The next thing I know we're basically side by side to each other. Then for some unknown reason he starts to slow down (Or maybe my trep is just faster) Was it a trick for me to slow down too? Well I didn't fall for it. I was at around 94 mph when an ambulance was coming down the opposite side of the road. Sooooo..... unfortuantly I had to slow down, and pull off to the side. We met up at the local Wa-Wa (convience store), and he said and I quote : "Damn Tony, once I heard your car revved up I knew that I was done for". So there you go folks. Thats my story. Nothing fancy about it, just a good old fashioned 2.7 liter whooping up on stock cars. Too bad it was a fellow Intrepid owner. :(

Don't get me wrong ; I'm not all cocky saying that I will beat ALL 3.2's. Even I know that.

was this really a race? It's hardly a power contest if he backed off due to traffic reasons

you mentioned he just got this car, could you race again once he has had a chance to get used to the car? from what you wrote it sounds like you were ready to race and he was just playing around

take it to the local track (or at least an open 1/4 mile area) and see how the two of you really do

I really don't know if he backed off due to the fact of the ambulance, or what. Maybe he sneezed, who knows. He was talking alot of smack at work. Saying how he would destroy me, etc, etc. (We're friends so we took none of this serious). Ok, it was kind of unfair, since he's owned his trep for about a week or so. I'll give him a month. Is that fair?

It doesn't matter how long he has had it... not like there is a clutch to get used to or so much power you have to learn how to launch without spinning the wheels. What's to learn "push the pedal all the way down".

Although I thought you guys were going to find some deserted back road or something not race in traffic.

Not always true. Being his car is "stock", it may tend to bog down at full throttle.
I know it took me a good month to learn where and when my Vision would loose tractioin around corners, brute braking power, and at what rpm to launch it at. I went from driving a prepped SCCA Autocross S-10 p/u to the Vision. Totally different driving styles.
Put them together at a Autocross track, then we'll see who the best driver is;)

Good job crombiekid23, sticking up for us 2.7L!!! I am shocked you were able to catch up to him after the take off and be side by side. That is impressive, i would have thought it would be over once he took off and your foot slipped off the gas pedal.

Me too I drove a 2.7 SE rental from Boston to NY about a month before buying my 3.2L ES. The 2.7L is geared a little bit lower so at around town speeds they seem the same but once you hit highway speeds the 3.2 seems a lot faster.

Thank you. Just to let everyone know, there isn't a circle track, or 1/4 mile track around here. (not as far as I know, and I've been here since March of 1999)

Don't the 2.7L engines have different transmission gearing ratios? If so, this may be enough to offset the little difference in horsepower.

Don't make me drive down there to see what you can do to an R/T:biggrin:

Sounds like you guys had fun just doing a little friendly racing!! Keep doing it. And you are right there are no tracks close. The closest one is in VA.

Ha-Ha!! I DARE you to come down. Not only will we have some friendly racing, but we'll drink beer and drool over each others trep. :D

If i remeber correctly the 2.7L has the lower gear ratio like the Prowler, i think this was to compensate for the low end power. Maybe some one else with better knowledge of 2.7l engines can explain it better?
