Put straight pipes on it. That's what I have and it sounds like a v8 ...at idle. As for the rest of the rpm range ...good luck!

The only reason the v6 sounds like a v8 at idle is because the exhaust is pulsing through the system at the same rate so it reaches your ear very similarly. At anything above idle the number of pulses for the v8 is more than the v6 so it sounds different. Its nearly impossible to get it to sound correctly. I'm sure if you have a degree in exhaust system design and a LOT of spare time you could do it. but for the average joe, I'd just look for an exhaust system that sounds good to you and go for it. Personally I love my straight pipes, its a very unique sound.

Yeah, like I have that kind of technology! I've been trying to coordinate an audio recording of my exhaust since I signed up here but I was never able to do it ...till now. But of course my car isnt running right now so I still got nothing. Sorry. Maybe next year!

Keep in mind that 3.2L is sohc and your 3.3L is ohv. Some people dont agree but I maintain that makes a big difference in sound! If you like the way that sounds then go for it! Just be aware that it wont sound identical.

Hey, I have to do the exhaust on my mom's '97 caravan. Could you send me some tips, tricks, pics, etc...? Unfortunately, she got stuck with the 3.0 mitsu engine. But, I've been slowly convincing my friend with a 3000gt vr4 to "borrow" me his heads, manifolds, turbos, etc...
No, I'm not insane ...most days! :flame:

Pipe from over the axle going into the inlet, then running one pipe straight out the back, the other one having a 90 degree bend, going over to the other side, another 90 degree bend letting you run it straight out the back on the other side.

It's not that hard... there are plenty of ways to do it. Just sit down and draw it out, maybe you'll come up with a better way.
Kinda like this??

btw, I HATE it like this. I get flow out the drivers side pipe but not the pass. ...but it sounds good!

The only problem with running side pipes is that they need to exit behind the rear most passenger's head. In Michigan at least. Doing it on an intrepid would be cutting it close. Personally I'd rather have it exit behind the tire, a little quieter and it still looks cool as hell. I'll probably do that with mine next time, it would look really good with 1st gen firebird tips (duals).

Wrap it, get some header wrap and wrap the exhaust in that area. Or make a heat shield and put it above the exhaust. There are ways around the heat. For a heat shield you could go the the junkyard and snag a cat converter shield they are usually designed to clamp on to the pipe so install would be easy. I took my car to a shop for the exhaust that I have and I regret it. Worst $160 I ever spent. I love the sound but the method they used is rediculous.

I was 16 and it was my first mod, I blame being young and stupid.

Next time it gets done will be mandrel bent stainless, cut and fitted by me. Then the only one to blame will be me. One of the first things I do when I get it back on the road will be a trip to the exhaust shop. They are cutting off that pass side pipe and welding in a patch. I'm tired of one being covered in carbon and the other in rust. Its only a temporary fix but I wont kick myself as hard everytime I walk around the back.

see, exhaust is a tool of learning... at least it didnt cost Too much. I think the only reason mine was cheaper is because I dont have a muffler. Straight Pipes are Cheap!

Three years with my straight pipes and I still Love it! The one and only reason why I'm looking into mufflers is to change the tone a bit, take the raspiness out of it.

btw, I think my car is about as close to a v8 as your going to get from a v6. I'll take some sound from in the car driving around and you'll see[hear] what I mean.

When I put the turbo on it will smooth out a bit so I wouldnt get too attached.

I am uploading those vids to youtube, see what kind of comments I get.

I read that when these engines were new they didnt acctually need any cat conv to pass emissions, they put them on because it would be illegal if they didnt. So if you didnt have visual inspection it might pass anyway. I always thought it would be interesting to test that notion. One of the few things I love about michigan is the lack of emissions testing, and no front license pate.

We dont even have inspections for registering. The only time we get inspected is if its rebuilt or homebuilt and that's only a visual done by the local PD. I got my '72 240Z registered when it had no front suspension, no intake, no brakes, no interior. I thought it was kind of funny because they had to get out this ratty old book to look up my car, apparently not a lot of old cars get registered there.

ONLY 3.5L First Gens Have resonators!! 3.3Ls did not have them. That is one of the few exterior visual cues about what engine is under the hood. The diagram stevo drew is accurate for a 3.3L trep. If you have a resonator where he has circled in red then you also have a 3.5L! If not, then you Do Not have a Stock exhaust system.

Memory is telling me its a 2.25" inlet pipe.

Some shops wont run exhaust down the pass side because of all the fuel stuff over there, and some will. Thought you might want to know. Oh and keep in mind that stainless like doubles the price or something

I know that somewhere on this wonderful website there is sizing for the entire exhaust system for both engines. I just have no idea where it is.

I thought your van was gone man, whats going on over there?

So I can go with 2.5" for my car? Or should I wait for the turbo and maybe go bigger?
