Yes, yet another trep in limp mode with a code 700. I did a search on the forums and read up on the input/output speed sensors, and so I am pretty confident this is my problem. All the symptoms add up: stuck in 2nd gear, no speedometer. My tach works OK so I gather it is the output sensor that is bad. I was able to find them OK but I can barely get my hands up there! Does anyone who has replaced theirs have any tips on how to get to them?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give. This source of info is really great. My Haynes manual says absolutely NOTHING about the sensors or limp mode. I would be at the mercy of the dealer if not for all of the helpful info here!

The only code that I see Shipman that closely resembles 700 is P0700 "EATX Contoller DTC Present" Is that what you have?

Yes, Crombie, I got the P 700 code from the odometer display when I cycle the key three times. The link for code descriptions lists that simply as "problem with the automatic transmission computer." Do you have more specific info on this code? From what I have read from others' experience, replacing the input and/or output sensors usually is the fix. I am willing to try that and see, but I had trouble getting my hands up there. Also, do I have to worry about fluid coming out of the port when I take them out?

I read that someone paid $320 for this repair at the dealer, so I would like to do it myself if I am able!

The info that I have for a code P0700 is: This SBEC 111 or JTEC DTC indicates that the EATX or Aisin controller has an active fault and has illuminated the Mil via a CCD (EATX) or SCI (Aisin) message. The specific fault must be acquired from the EATX via CCD or from the Aisin via ISO-9141.
Ok, can someone translate that for me too??

OK, I chickened out. Since my Dodge dealer was only going to charge me $48 in labor, I limped on down and had them do it this morning. Not worth bloodying my knuckles to save $48. I had both the input and output sensors replaced and my trep is back in action.

While I was waiting, I played on an interactive terminal they had in the showroom where you can "build your new dodge." The opening screen shows a fleet of red Dodge vehicles - and there was no intrepid! There was the Caravan, Ram, Durango, Dakota, Neon, and Stratus. There were menu options for the Intrepid but the fact that it was not on the opening screen says a lot about about it's future in my opinion. It is definitely not their flagship product anymore. Maybe it never was?

Wow! $48 for labor to replace both sensors. Thats a great deal in my opinion. I bet that your glad that your trep is back in action.

Glad you got your trep fixed so quickly. Mine did the same thing a few months ago so I did a little root cause analysis to find out the problem. What I came up with is that the sensor that goes into the tranny is magnatized, thus allowing metal shavings in the tranny oil to accumulate on the sensor. Once a "bridge" is formed from one side of the sensor to the other it shorts out. This was a poor desgin by Chrylser. Seems that if you clean the sensor and put it pack in then it works fine again. Maybe this can save you guys some money when this happens to you.

$48 in labor
That's an excellent deal...When I took my car in to get my window fixed, the base labor to inspect the problem (which wasn't even needed--the problem was obvious) was $90, and that was to remove the inner door panel only, something that could be done with a screwdriver in 5 minutes. I got that money back in the end anyway because I bitched, but anyways....

I had the limp mode problem right after I got my car, and it ended up being something quite major that required full tranny replacement. Good thing it was under warranty, it was over $2k!

I think that being able to go there with a knowledge of what the problem is, and what was required to fix it really helped with the cost. That way they couldn't charge me for the computer scan and what not. As I said before, when I did a search of these forums for "limp mode" I came across someone who got charged $320! I think it included something like $50 to "reset the check engine light." That is just plain ripping people off.

I was on the lot the other day and saw that the '04 Intrepids were out already. How is it that they are able to release them already considering it's not even a new or revised model or anything?

Also, is 2004 going to be the last production year for the Intrepids?

Yet another Limper here

About 65k, driving along at 40MPH and she slams into 2nd. I checked around and found you guys. Changed out my sensors.
In case it helps anyone - I had to buy a 1" deep well socket and a 4" extension. I put driver's side up on a jack stand and removed the wheel. See JoeKD's post which has image of location, essentially just rear of driver side wheel. The wire connector has a little plastic keeper on it you have to pry up to get the connector off. I had to manipulate an awl under the tab with my fingertips (that was the hardest part of the whole deal). The sensor turned easy once I broke it loose. Minimal drips of fluid leaked out. Not much room under there, but I did whole job in less than an hour.
One sensor was gunky on the end though my fluid is clean looking.
Test run went fine, six or seven runs through all the gears up and down smooth and nice.
Next morning back in limp mode. Guess I'll let the pros take a look.

dwpoyner - that's too bad! Sorry to hear that. Just curious - what kinds of "stuff" went wrong?

Ok, here it is, after being without my car another 5 days for a trip to the trans shop. Torque converter, several of the planetary gear assemblies, valve bodies, and miscelaneous hardware such as screws and pins. The second time, my car drops into second and will not do anything but park, reverse or second. I was going 65 MPH down the interstate at the time. A pin broke that holds several components together. Tranny dropped a bunch of stuff and spends 5 days in hibernation again. I'm getting tired of this...

I had the input speed sensor go bad on mine, luckily it was still under warranty from buying it from the dealership, so i lucked out of about an $80 bill. :)
