I use Autolite platinums. I've had many many people tell me that the bosch +4 and splitfire plugs are wasetful, sometimes harmful. I love my autolite platinums, no performance increase, but they'll last a long time.

 

I was told by Jacobs electronics to use Autolite regulars.

 

I have another idea. Use the CHAMPION platinums. These have worked great for me!!

 

Do we have any mechanics or otherwise who have seen the damage that +4's are supposed to do? I have these plugs and they work great, but if there is evidence that they work too well, well I would like to know.

 

I had them.... first thing I did when I got my trep. Went to the reg. bosch plats, and noticed that the +4's did have a little smoother idle. Performance really wasn't different. I was going to put the +4's back in, but since the head-gasget issue, I am reluctant to try too many new things.

 

A friend of mine goes to Hot Rod U (yes its really a school) They say the Bosch are great.

 

I run NGK V-power in my 3.5, in my 2.0, and in my 2.2 turbo. My 360cu in mopar boat motor runs champions, but champ is now owned by allied signal, A.K.A. Autolite. I had been using Bosch platinums until a friend of mine had one that let go of it's porcelian inside the cylinder! Imagine what the wall looked like after that!?

Personally, I like the NGK's.

Sorry, but it's no longer Allied Signal, it's Honeywell.

I'm not saying this to be partial to a Honeywell product (see sig), but Autolite are supposed to be some of the best spark plugs on the market.

That's what i was told.

 

So there is no real consensus. I paid more for the NGK's but the Bosch +4 are also a good plug.I dunno....confusion setting in, I'll go shopping at Wal-mart and check the Autolites too.

Those of you that use the Bosch +4's don't take this the wrong way. I have heard some bad things about these plugs. I have never used them personally but like silver ghost said I have heard of them coming apart.

One thing that you have to think about is how our cars actually use the spark from the coil. If you look at it there are only 3 coil packs. That means that when a coil pack gets energized two plugs are lit. One of those sparks is wasted on an empty cylinder. Because the +4's have 4 different paths to take you could actually back fire a plug (spark would go from the grounding arm to the electrode). This would cause serious deposition on the pocelain electrode, causing premature failure of the plug.

The spark will always take the path of less resistance. So the spark will only choose the 1 or 2 ground straps that it can most easily jump to. This would cause deposition on the other straps making them useless. The reason a spark plug stays clean all of the time is because of the spark. If all but one of the straps were to get deposits on them then you would be right back to a normal spark plug.

Because there can be a tendency to back fire through one plug that would make the spark on the other plug 2 times more powerful and thus beyond the current load that the plug was designed to handle. This too would cause a premature plug failure.

Another thing that I have heard about these plugs is that if you have them you better be very careful on putting them into your engine. Someone told me that there have been cases of the ground straps breaking off inside the engine.

I am not saying that these plugs are complete garbage. I have heard some very good things about them, but they are all from people who have them in engines that either have a distributor or separate coils for each cylinder.

I am only stating things that I have heard from people that have used these plugs and based on their feed back I do not use them. I am running Autolite plugs in my car right now and they have been very good.

Thanks Kyle, the NGK's I have right now are the platinum ones with the very fine tip on them.The pack said they were good till 100,00 km but I like to change them earlier.
